ACEPHAP Trains Health Workers in Delta State to Scale-up E-MOTIVE Care for Postpartum Haemorrhage

As part of ongoing efforts to scale up the implementation of the E-MOTIVE bundle of care for the prevention and management of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) across Nigeria, African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) in Delta State under the Advocacy and Implementation of Maternal, Newborn, Child, Nutrition and Health (AIM MNCNH) Project.

The training is aimed at equipping selected healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and practical competencies required to effectively train and mentor frontline health workers on the use of the E-MOTIVE approach. By strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers, the initiative seeks to promote timely recognition and appropriate management of postpartum haemorrhage and improve maternal health outcomes.

Postpartum haemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal deaths globally, with Nigeria accounting for a significant proportion of the burden. The initiative is therefore part of ACEPHAP’s broader commitment to addressing the country’s high maternal mortality burden through the implementation and scale-up of evidence-based interventions that can improve the quality, availability, and timeliness of maternal healthcare services.

Through the AIM MNCNH Project, ACEPHAP is working closely with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the adoption and scale-up of proven interventions, including the E-MOTIVE bundle, which comprises early detection and prompt management of PPH using a combination of evidence-based interventions. The Delta State ToT represents another important step towards building a sustainable network of trained healthcare providers who can cascade the intervention to other frontline health workers and contribute to reducing preventable maternal deaths from postpartum haemorrhage.

ACEPHAP is supporting five health facilities with essential equipment, training materials, and commodities. The supported facilities are: Central Hospital Ughelli, Central Hospital Agbor, Central Hospital Sapele, Delta State University Teaching Hospital and Asaba Specialist Hospital.

The facilities have received critical equipment and training resources, including PPH emergency trolleys, Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments (NASG), blood pressure measuring devices, MamaNatalie and NeoNatalie simulators, as well as facilitator and participant manuals to support in-facility training and continuous capacity building.

In addition, ACEPHAP has provided six months’ supply of essential PPH commodities to the supported facilities as seed stock to facilitate the initiation and sustained use of the E-MOTIVE bundle. The commodities include PPH drapes, Oxytocin, Tranexamic Acid (TXA), Heat-Stable Carbetocin (HSC), and Misoprostol.

The combination of healthcare worker training, essential equipment, simulation-based learning resources, and the provision of PPH commodities is expected to strengthen the readiness of health facilities to prevent, detect, and promptly manage postpartum haemorrhage.

By building the capacity of trainers and ensuring the availability of essential equipment and commodities, the program aims to establish a sustainable model for scaling up E-MOTIVE care and ultimately contribute to saving mothers’ lives and reducing preventable maternal deaths from postpartum haemorrhage across Nigeria.
